“What’s your plan for the future?” I ask this soft spoken little boy. “I will stay here and study, grow big and help my mother”, he tells me with quiet confidence. “And what is your ambition, what will you become?” I ask him, “A policeman’, he replies.

Razik comes from Trincomalee, a major town in the Eastern coast of the Island. He lived there with his Mother, three brothers and two sisters he said. He wouldn’t tell me about the circumstances that led to him being at GLH, but going by what he wants to achieve, it is not too hard to put together.

He was happy about his English speaking abilities, but did confess to not knowing much Sinhalese. At school his favorite subject is English, he tells me. Back at the home he plays Chess with the ‘Father’ of the home and badminton with his mates. One of the first kids to join GLH, he too ranks Husni as his best buddy.

He likes where he is right now. A place where he can study and play, things that he likes to do. He also likes Rice and Pittu he says, food that he gets to his heart’s content at the home.

He gives me a beautiful smile when I ask to photograph him, trying not to pose too much.
